The Arts

The arts are celebrated at The Putney School. There is almost never a bare wall, or a day gone by without some form of artistic expression. Experience in the arts is central to a Putney education. We take the arts seriously while simultaneously supporting a spirit of playful discovery. We remind students that their personal expression is found within themselves, their experience, and abilities.  We challenge students to inquire deeply and take creative risks that value process as well as product.  We encourage the development and sensitivity of a student’s perception, increased self-awareness, and a more extensive, intimate, and enduring emotional response to the world around them.

During the academic day, students are offered an in-depth foundation in a diverse range of disciplines in the visual and performing arts. All students have the opportunity to expand their interest in the arts by participating in the Evening Arts program.  Many students continue their work in the arts during Project Week, and seniors often choose tutorial courses and Senior Exhibitions in the arts, to delve into their media in greater depth and concentration.
