In 1904 Heinrich Rubens built a device that allows a standing wave of flame to be formed by sound. Such waves can be plotted mathematically, using trigonometry, which is why Wing Mui and his Pre-Calculus class are outside on a Saturday morning watching propane flames dance to funky music. Math is the language best used to describe the physical world we observe.
