BUILDING THE FUTURE Campaign Overview

"As a student at Putney, I learned that we could accomplish more by working together than alone... if enough of us get together behind an effort like this, we can make a significant contribution. It's also another way of staying connected while achieving something worthwhile."
— Vasily Dostoinov '97

The Putney School engaged in a capital campaign, BUILDING THE FUTURE, to enrich life at the School by strengthening its cultural and recreational programs. The campaign's goal was to raise funds for two environmentally friendly and sustainable buildings - the school's first new non-residential construction in more than 25 years!.

Although enjoying full student enrollment, burgeoning programs, and trained faculty and students eager to participate, the School has not had appropriate space for many popular activities and opportunities for creative expression. By increasing space for developing talent and opportunities for creative expression, the new facilities will strengthen Putney's programs, support its unique position among boarding schools, improve the quality of life for its community of students and faculty, and ensure perpetuation of The Putney School's mission into the 21st Century.

The Michael S. Currier Center, was the first to be constructed, and is now in full use. and performance space for music and dance, and houses an art gallery, dance studio, music library, music practice rooms, a computer-based music composition lab and a video/film editing lab. The Field House will contain a regulation-size basketball and volleyball court, weight room, cross-country ski waxing room and locker and shower facilities. Consistent with The Putney School's philosophy, both structures will be environmentally friendly and sustainable.

The sooner we build, the sooner our students and the Putney community will benefit. Through more than 70 years of good economic times and bad, the school and farm have thrived, struggled and endured, a testament to the founder's unique vision and to the support of its dedicated alumni, parents, faculty and friends. Having succeeded in running on a balanced budget for eight consecutive years and in significantly increasing its endowment, The Putney School is now in sound financial condition and well prepared to take on the challenge of preparing for the future. These two buildings will play an integral part in continuing to attract the talented and motivated students Putney seeks, and in ensuring that the unique Putney School educational experience is available for many more generations of students to come.
