Sarah Grasso (Hip Hop teacher)
Sarah Grasso
was born and raised in Stamford, CT where she began dancing at age three. In both Stamford and NYC she trained in tap, jazz and ballet but "found herself" through "hip hop"/ street/pop. She graduated from College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine with a degree in human ecology (concentration in psychology and dance), she is currently a graduate student at Antioch University New England in Keene. Sarah has taught dance in CT and ME, and in the area at the Boys & Girls Club of Brattleboro, Brattleboro School of Dance, Marlboro College, Brattleboro Union High School and is the assistant director of a residential arts camp for young people, Young People's Institute (YPI), where she has been teaching dance for the past seven years.
Anthony Manuel (African Dance teacher)
The Putney School dance program welcomes Anthony Manuel, Los Angeles choreographer and current Artistic Director for the Island Inspiration All-Stars performance company based in the San Juan Islands of Washington. An avid instructor of many dance forms, his own performing career spanned performing on the streets of London to becoming the Hit-Man for Uncle Jams Army a crew of 15 of the zaniest Breakdancers and DJs on the West coast in it's time. In addition to street time Anthony was a huge part in a newly developing entertainment industry arm from choreography to production coordination, storyboard and set design for Universal Concerts working with many artist which included Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie and Tina Turner to name a few. Spending roughly 36 weeks out of the year on world tours, Manuel studied many different dance forms from all corners of the earth and returned with the same theme that no matter where we are from, we move as one people. Anthony will be teaching Hip Hop and Afro-Modern this Fall.
Patricia Wilson (Dunham based Jazz/Modern teacher, choreographer and co-director of TPS Dance Ensemble)
Patricia Wilson
began dancing at a young age at square dances in West Halifax, Vermont, where she learned that dancing is about joy and community. She began practicing yoga and meditation as a teenager. Her company, ziadance, reflects these roots. With 25 dancers ranging from nine to 75 years old, ziadance toured in Russia in 1995, performing Imani's Song and Images to Grow By. Patricia is part of a small group of dancers chosen and certified by dance pioneer, Katherine Dunham, to continue her legacy. Patricia has taught Dunham technique, ballet, modern, fitness and figure skating in the Brattleboro area for over twenty-five years. Also a filmmaker, Patricia's film, Kaliope, screened in festivals in DC and Seattle in 2003. Patricia received her BA in Music and Dance from Middlebury College and her MFA in Film Production from Loyola Marymount University.
Kalya Yannatos (Arts Department Chair,
Director of the Dance Program
and the Evening Arts Program)
Born to a family of artists and musicians, raised in Cambridge, MA, Kalya Yannatos (Director of the Putney School Dance Program, choreographer and co-director of TPS Dance Ensemble, Ballet and Modern teacher) spent eighteen years dancing professionally in NYC, where in addition to dancing the work of many in a variety of companies, she also received commissions to create her own work, which she performed throughout the country. Her company, Human Arts Ensemble served as a creative culmination to the collaborative work she was engaged in with artists of many forms during this time in her life. Kalya has enjoyed teaching both ballet and modern classes for all levels and ages, and has done so at professional studios in both NYC and Los Angeles, CA. Additionally, she has facilitated movement workshops in hundred's of schools, (on both coasts), community centers, juvenile prisons and senior centers, as an artist on the roster of Young Audiences in NYC, followed by the Music Center Education Division of LA, and since moving to Vermont in 2002, as a "Juried Artist" for the Vermont Arts Council. Before becoming the director of the Dance Program at the Putney School in 2004, she taught, and choreographed dances in the area at Marlboro College, Brattleboro School of Dance, Vermont Academy and Deerfield Academy. Her work at the Putney School includes directing the Evening Activity Arts Program in addition to continuing to build and nurture the Dance Program.
