A few days before graduation, the KDU windmill project came to fruition. After laying the groundwork and wiring the power converter during Project Week last December, the tower and turbine were installed by an enthusiastic crowd of volunteers.
The raising made the newspaper's notice. When photographer Jason Henske dug deeper, he became intrigued with all the other renewable energy projects taking place that week. A photo op turned into a full front page in the Brattleboro Reformer's weekend Photo Journal. The windmill produces a kilowatt hour in modest winds of 12-18 mph. It's enough to run the lights in the KDU. The converter can handle up to three additional turbines, or the equivalent in solar arrays. When the lights are off, the turbine keeps working to effectively turn the KDU electric meter backwards, bringing the campus that much closer to 'off the grid.'
