A Bunch of Jazz Rookies Strut Their Stuff. Like the swallows returning to San Juan Capistrano, the fall Jazz Ensemble performance is an ongoing miracle--especially years such as this one in which everyone's a new member.
Jazz Teacher Peter Tavalin never knows what he's going to get, but it doesn't seem to get in his way. This year there's no drummer, so Peter arranged the music to pass much of the pacemaking to the piano and bass. No shortage of horns this go-round, however. But he's coached them well. The sound was jazz, not John Philip Sousa--you could hear the flute and clarinets over the trumpet and saxaphones just fine. Probably the most surprised were the musicians themselves, who traded solos like pros and helped keep the beat with snapping fingers between riffs. Sure wish you could have heard it.
