It's not often you see an all-school tug-of-war competition and orchestra tryouts at the same morning assembly, even at a place with a program as broad as Putney's, but today was the exception.
The orchestral tryouts were for three fairly strategic positions in an upcoming performance of cartoon-inspired classical music. Judges had it easy for the slide whistle and cymbal crash, as there was only a single contestant for each of those spots. The bird whistle, however, drew a pair of faculty members and the judges were stumped. Abijah was able to warble like a chicadee in full tones, half tones and thirds. Gordon had to be coached not to cluck like a chicken the first go-round, but mustered some decent whistling and recovered.

The tug-of-war was yet another event in this year's Dorm Olympics. Eight members per dorm squared off against each other in the initial heats this morning. The conclusion is slated for this afternoon at 1 p.m. Winner goes against a faculty/staff team for the all-school title.
