Miles for Heifers

Our farm hand, associate dean of students and the farm manager's son have broken free of the grid to pedal miles from Alaska to Panama in the name of donated heifers.

On June 20th, 2008. Noah Hoskins-Forsythe, Tim Whittemore and Sam Stickney began their ride from Anchorage, Alaska, to the Panama Canal. They are traveling on touring bicycles, totally self-supported. You can view their progress and support their ride by visiting: www.cowspokes.com.

Growing up in rural areas among farming families, agriculture has always been of special significance to Tim, Sam, and Noah. "We feel that Heifer International is a unique and exceptional organization, and any attention and support that we can draw to their worthy cause through our ride makes the formidable task we are undertaking worthwhile!"

Heifer International is a charitable organization based in Little Rock, AR. Their goal is to create just and sustainable development throughout the world by a variety of means. Seeking to create long-term solutions to poverty and hunger, their model is quite simple: Through the donation of livestock and other supplies, training, and organizational development, those who receive their gifts are able to become economically self-sufficient and are empowered to pass this generosity on to others in their communities. Check out www.heifer.org/give for more information on the Heifer International giving model.

"Giving money to Heifer International through our team offers a unique opportunity to make the most of donated dollars," say the cyclists. "Many charity walks/rides require a large amount of organization and infrastructure that can eat up to 50% of the donations. Our costs for this trip will be covered by personal savings and by an elite group of sponsors, insuring that 100% of the donations will go to Heifer International. Donor dollars will go straight to the purchase of ducks, goats, trees, bees, pigs, lamas, buffalo and other livestock (including cows of course!)."

"If we meet our fundraising goal of $10,000," say Noah, Tim and Sam, "we will have donated 20 heifers to those in need! Thank you so much for your support, and please continue to check out our blog and send us email at cowspokes@gmail.com."
