gc Green cup Challenge

Boarding schools from around New England competed against each other for the third year running in an effort to reduce campus energy consumption. The game goes like this: After a monitoring period to create a baseline, it’s game on. The intra-dorm competition this year was fierce (in one dorm clothing found spinning in driers was routinely tossed out in the snow) and the stakes high. The school cut its energy use 13.8% overall, saving 8,782 kwh, $1,141 and 11,768 lbs. of CO2. Six out of 8 dormitories cut energy use by more than 10% and won pizza nights for their efforts. Putney finished third overall and first among previous year competitors. There’s a definite advantage to being a newcomer to energy savings because there’s so much you can do right out of the blocks that saves lots of energy and doesn’t require much behavior modification. So congratulations go to our students, faculty and staff for really giving it a go this year.
