Bread Oven Installation Begins
The waiters’ dining room of the KDU is being refurbished to receive a wood-fired bread oven, courtesy of a birthday present from an alum’s family. The back wall has been torn out and a pad has been built that will bear the weight of the bricks. Sliding glass doors opening into the KDU dining room will provide both visual and olfactory access to the baking process. Harkening back to the days of wood-fired baking in what is now the infirmary, lighting and stoking the bread oven fire will become a student work job. Other ideas are in the works for including the new oven in other areas of the curriculum. In addition to bread, the oven will be used for making pizza and other baked dishes. A much smaller project than the field house, the oven should be operational in weeks, rather than months. Check back here for progress reports.
