The Putney School Summer Programs

EMPLOYMENT

The Putney School Summer Programs serve students age 14 through 17 who are seeking enrichment in the visual arts, music, theater, dance, writing, and ESL. Intensive participation and involvement by faculty, staff and students best characterizes the nature of the commitment that successful participants bring to the programs.

Summer Openings:

Dormitory Head/Apprentice Teacher (minimum 21 yrs old) – 18 positions FILLED FOR 2008

Dates of Employment: June 15 through August 2, 2008

Applicants are welcome to send resumes should we have an unexpected opening, and/or please apply next year. We begin hiring in January.

Dormitory Head/Apprentice Teachers hold the primary responsibility for the safety and well being of participants during the hours students are not in their workshops. Dormitory Head/Apprentice Teachers work with mentor teachers in one arts, writing or ESL workshop each session and share responsibility for 8 to 25 students in dormitories. Dormitory Head/ Apprentice Teachers lead outdoor afternoon activities, evening arts activities, camping trips and special events. The position of Dormitory Head/Apprentice Teacher is a seasonal (summer) position which requires energy, commitment, and stamina for six uninterrupted weeks of work directly with students. Participation in a week-long orientation training program prior to the start of the program is required of all Dormitory Head/Apprentice Teachers. All employees of the Summer Programs are responsible for maintaining community standards for behavior.

 

Teachers: Visual Arts, Music, Theater, Dance, Writing, ESOL FILLED FOR 2008

Dates of employment: June 18 through August 2, 2008

Faculty positions with The Putney School Summer Programs are seasonal (summer) positions and carry responsibility for workshop instruction. Faculty teach morning and afternoon 3-hour workshops or in one full-day program. In addition, Faculty provide leadership for Independent Studio Time, Open Readings, student and faculty performances, presentations, discussions, class trips and collaborative endeavors with colleagues and guest artists.

Position calls for individuals who enjoy teenagers, who have 3 or more years experience teaching high-school age students and who are actively working in their respective medium. Faculty serve as one-on-one mentors for college-age apprentice teachers and supervise studio assistants. ESL teachers must have experience teaching adolescents in an intensive language program; a Master's degree is preferred for ESL candidates.

Prior to arrival on campus, faculty are responsible for submitting curriculum for their workshop and for ordering supplies through the Summer Programs Business Manager. Upon arrival, faculty must prepare and maintain their classroom, equipment, material and supplies. Faculty write evaluations of each student at the conclusion of each session and a program evaluation at the conclusion of period of employment. Attendance at all faculty meetings, assemblies and specified campus-wide events is required. Faculty participate in various activities of the residential program and work intensively to contribute to the overall success of the program. All employees of the Summer Programs are responsible for maintaining community standards for behavior.

Transportation Coordinator - One Position FILLED FOR 2008

Dates of employment: June 4 through August 6, 2008

The Transportation Coordinator is a seasonal (summer) position carrying responsibility for the organization and administration of all transportation for the two three-week programs. Position requires coordination of all student and staff arrival and departure, all off-campus field trips and outings, management and record keeping of all school busses and other vehicles used by the programs, and the hiring and scheduling of all drivers employed by the programs. As a member of the six-person Summer Programs administrative team, the Transportation Coordinator attends regular team meetings and serves in the evening office duty rotation 6:30pm – 10:30pm.

Strong organizational skills, communication skills, and the ability to work effectively as a member of a core administrative team are characteristics of successful applicants. Strong computer skills are essential. All employees of the Summer Programs are responsible for maintaining community standards for behavior.

Residential Life Coordinator – One position FILLED FOR 2008

Dates of employment: May 28 through August 6, 2008

Residential Life Coordinator is a seasonal (summer) position carrying responsibility for the organization and administration of the dormitories and of the overall quality of residential life for our six-week program.Position calls for an individual who enjoys teenagers and who has experience working with high-school age students.

The Residential Life Coordinator works closely with college-age residential staff, managing their assignments and responsibilities as Dormitory Heads. As a core member of the six-person Summer Programs administrative team, the Residential Life Coordinator works intensively to contribute to the overall success of the program.

Strong organizational and inter-personal skills, an appreciation of the arts, of life outdoors and of life in an office (computer skills) are all essential qualities of the successful candidate for this position. Participation in daily meetings and office coverage rotation is required.

Position requires time in June to plan residential staff orientation, to assign dormitory rooms and roommates and to coordinate student arrival and departure transportation. Summer responsibilities include coordination of meals, off-campus transportation, special events and participation in all program meetings. The Residential Life Coordinator works closely with the director. All employees of the Summer Programs are responsible for maintaining community standards for behavior.

Activities Coordinator – One position FILLED FOR 2008

Dates of employment: May 28 through August 6, 2008

The Activities Coordinator is a seasonal (summer) position carrying responsibility for the organization and administration of the Afternoon Outdoor Activity Program, the Evening Arts Activity Program, Camping Trip Weekends, Community Service, and Special Events/Performances for our six-week program.

Position calls for an individual who enjoys teenagers and who has experience working with high-school age students. The Activities Coordinator works closely with college-age dormitory heads, managing their assignments and responsibilities in the afternoon, evening, and camping trip activities. As a core member of the six-person Summer Programs administrative team, the Activities Coordinator works intensively to contribute to the overall success of the program.

Strong organizational skills, an appreciation of the arts, of life outdoors and of life in an office (computer skills) are all essential qualities of the successful candidate for this position. Participation in daily meetings and office coverage rotation is required.

Organization and management of program camping gear and outdoor equipment and facilities is required. Ideally, the Activities Coordinator holds valid certification in both First Aid and CPR. All employees of the Summer Programs are responsible for maintaining community standards for behavior.

Health Services Nurse RN – seasonal summer employment – Two Positions FILLED FOR 2008

• works collaboratively with the Director of Summer Programs and the Coordinator of Health Services to provide medical services to the school’s summer population of approximately 200 students and staff for both three-week sessions.

• manages summer student medical records, administration of medications

• daily clinic hours from 7:30am – 7:30pm M-F, in two shifts (morning nurse from 7:30am to 2:00pm and afternoon nurse from 1:00pm – 7:30pm), with reduced and variable hours on either Saturday or Sunday.

• on-call duty compensated additionally.

The ideal candidate has strong experience working as a nurse, excellent communication and organizational skills, a good rapport with teens, flexibility in outlook, energy, and a sense of humor.

Minimum requirements: experienced RN, available for the 7 weeks of the programs.

Compensation:  $7,500 and meals on campus when working with the programs. Housing available; summer tuition reduction for high school children of employee

Health Services Assistant (minimum 21 years old) – One position FILLED FOR 2008

Dates of Employment: June 15 through August 2, 2008.

The Health Services Assistant works in collaboration with Summer Programs Nurses to operate Health Services for approximately 150 students and 35 staff members. The ideal candidate is currently a nursing or other health services student, with an intent to work in the Health Sciences. The position does not require licensure, but preference is given to applicants with background or schooling in health care. For all positions, preference is given to applicants who:

•Enjoy working with teenagers and have prior teaching or leadership experience

•Are able to commit to a high level of participation for the duration of the program

•Have a college major or career interest in the visual or performing arts, creative writing, English as a Second Language, or education

•Have outdoor skills and an appreciation of the rural environment

•Are conscientious, willing to work hard, and are committed to the safety, well-being, and growth of others and of themselves

Directions:
Putney is 115 miles from Boston and 213 miles from New York City.  There is plane service to Bradley International Airport in Hartford, Connecticut, and bus and train service to Brattleboro, Vermont.  When traveling by car, take Exit 4 off Interstate 91 in Vermont; go north on Route 5.  Turn left in the village of Putney at the General Store.  Approximately one mile from the village, turn left at West Hill Road.  Approximately one mile up West Hill Road, turn left onto Houghton Brook Road. As you come up the hill, the main entrance of The Putney School is the first drive on the left.
