Families and students who are applying to The Putney School for the first time and intend to apply for financial aid and those who are returning and have received financial aid in the past should do so through School & Student Services (SSS).

Who receives financial aid?
Any admission applicant may apply for financial aid. Putney School invests more than 20% of its tuition revenues into need-based awards in order to create as much socioeconomic diversity as possible in our community. Incomes reported are derived from combining incomes of divorced parents and their new partners, if any, now living in separate households. Family assets and liabilities as well as income are considered in the determination of financial aid grants. The Putney School does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, sexual orientation, or national or ethnic origin in its admission process or in the administration of its educational policies or scholarships.
How does Putney determine my level of need?
The Putney School begins the financial aid allocation process by using the guidelines, formulas, and data provided to the school by Schools & Student Services (SSS). The SSS report provides the first step in determining the reasonable contribution each family can make toward their child’s education. The SSS calculation is an estimate, which the Director of Admission & Financial Aid uses as a guide in determining a financial aid package.
Will applying for financial aid affect my child’s chances of admission?
Admission to The Putney School is based on the student’s qualifications; financial need is not a consideration for admission decisions.
If my child enrolls without financial aid, can we apply for it in the following years?
Students who enroll without financial aid during their first year should not expect to receive aid in following years. It is Putney’s expectation that families who begin paying full tuition will continue to do so. That said, family circumstances do change and in the event that a family’s financial capacities decline, they are encouraged to be in touch with the Director of Admission & Financial Aid.
Do we need to apply for financial aid each year?
Yes. Returning families are required to file a financial aid application, due January 1st.
If my child receives a financial aid award, can we count on a similar award in subsequent years? What if our family’s financial circumstances change?
The school intends to sustain reliable funding for its families. If a family’s circumstances substantially deteriorate or improve, the family should be in contact with the Director of Admission & Financial Aid and their aid application should illustrate the changed circumstances.
Who should complete the financial aid application if our family is separated and/or divorced?
Both parents’ financial situation is taken into account when calculating financial aid, regardless of the family’s configuration. Although parents may have an agreement that has established responsibility for one or the other to pay tuition, the financial aid process must consider all resources that might be available to the student. The Director of Admission & Financial Aid considers the financial resources of all living parents, stepparents, and domestic partners, and requires the cooperation of all parties before making a financial decision. If either parent has remarried, we will also take into consideration the spouse’s contributions to the household along with any obligations to his or her own children.
Can non-US citizens apply for financial aid?
Yes, a limited amount of funding is available to non-US citizens.
Should I apply online?
Yes, we encourage families to use the Schools and Student Services (SSS) online application.
When will I be notified of a financial aid decision?
Once a candidate has been accepted for admission, the Director of Admission & Financial Aid determines a grant amount for eligible candidates who have completed all of the required forms by the deadline. Admission decisions and financial aid packages are shared on March 10th, along with the tuition and fees schedule for the following year. Families who did not meet the January 1st deadline may not be included in that initial allotment of financial aid.
Does Putney have a loan program? Whom should I contact if I have questions regarding financial aid?
Although Putney does not offer a loan program, there are various options available to help ease the strain of tuition on a family’s budget. Those who do receive financial aid may also find payment plans and loans helpful.
