Introduction to Performing Arts

What is performance?
How do we perform in an authentic way that communicates our ideas to an audience?
How does performance relate to our culture—our community—ourselves?

In their attempts to answer the above questions, students will work together to devise an original, ensemble performance piece. Through experimentation with written prompts, energetic exercises, guided questions and discussion, students—both individually and together—will develop material that becomes an embodied portrait of how the they see their world. Over the week, they will examine the job of the performer, the skills they employ in that role, and begin to hone their own skills as compelling performers. Practical work will include the investigation and development of Focus, Impulse, Clarity and Control, Readiness, Sensation, and Imagination. We will work with improvisational scores, text and voice, imagery, prop exploration, sound and music, and movement.

All performative mediums are open for exploration—the possibilities limited only by the students’ imaginations. Our ultimate goal in this week is to come together as an ensemble in a collaborative venture, allowing students to discover and communicate something surprising and new in themselves as performing artists.
