Audio Arts & Production
This workshop explores the world of sound and teaches the technical tools to craft compelling works of audio. It is designed for all who are interested in sound as a medium and form. Our objective is to experiment with sounds and exhibit our findings.
We will play with musical instruments and comb the school grounds for sound producing sources – splashing water, wind chimes, chirping birds, neighing horses, laughing voices, etc. We will record these sounds and bring them back into the MiDi lab to process, edit, and compose into coherent compositions.
Some questions we will explore: What’s the difference between noise, sound, and music? How do we “design” sound? Where might we “find” music? What happens to sound when we combine it with an image?
During this workshop, students will:
- Develop skills in a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) such as Logic, Ableton Live, or Adobe Audition
- Experiment with sound recording tools such as microphones and audio recorders
- Explore sound synthesis and sound design using electronic and acoustic sources, such as the voice
At the end of the workshop, we will devise creative ways to exhibit our sonic compositions and productions. We may perform our sound pieces; or amplify them through speakers; or combine them with art from other workshops.
The workshop is open to all who wish to experiment with sound. No musical instrument proficiency is necessary, although some music theory background is welcomed. Perhaps you have already begun your sound exploration through editing videos, DJing, podcasting, or singing in the shower. The most important prerequisite is listening deeply to the world around you.
