Dear Putney Community,
Our Martin Luther King Jr. Remembrance Day observation will look different this year because we do not begin our Winter Trimester until February. As a result, the community is invited to participate in The Putney School’s 21-Day Racial Equity and Inclusion Learning Challenge. The learning challenge is based on The 21-Day Racial Equity Challenge created by Dr. Eddie Moore, Jr., Debby Irving, and Dr. Marguerite Penick-Parks. In thinking about learning and change, they write:
“Have you ever made a successful change in your life? Think about the time and attention you dedicated to the process. Change is hard. Creating effective social justice habits, particularly those dealing with issues of power, privilege, and leadership, is like any lifestyle change. Setting our intentions and adjusting what we spend our time doing is essential. It’s all about building new habits. Sometimes the hardest part is just getting started. The good news is, there’s an abundance of resources just waiting to empower you to be a more effective player in the quest for justice.”
From near or afar, we invite you to come to read, watch, listen, and grow alongside our student and adult community from January 18th to March 5th. Learning challenges will be posted every other day here (see below my letter). Live workshops and discussions are still being scheduled, and as they are finalized, you are also invited to participate and attend.
Thank you for taking the time to connect, reflect, and participate in this challenge. The challenge is a powerful opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of how inequity and racism affect our lives and our community.
