Gift Planning

Putney teaches students to think for themselves, to care about others, and to act on their beliefs. We’re asking you to do the same. Your bequest supports our continued work fostering clear thinkers, compassionate citizens, and empowered doers.

If you use a donor-advised fund (DAF) to distribute your charitable contributions, this online tool simplifies and speeds up the process. (If you would like to know more about donor-advised funds, please contact Hugh Montgomery ([email protected] or 802-387-6272) or the DAF of your choice.)

Bequests remain the most powerful way for alumni, parents, and friends to ensure that this educational experience endures. They are vital to our vision for the future of Putney and of progressive education at large.

Types of Planned Giving

There are many ways to provide for Putney in your estate plans. You may:

  • Leave Putney a specific dollar amount, or a percentage of your estate
  • Donate a particular asset, e.g. real estate or art
  • Establish Putney as a beneficiary of your retirement plan, IRA, 401(k), 403(b), appreciated securities, bank or brokerage account
  • Establish a charitable gift annuity to provide income to you (or a loved one) for life, with funds eventually being distributed to Putney
  • Name Putney as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy

Since many legacy gifts do not require you to part with assets during your lifetime, you may be able to make your most significant contributions to Putney through your estate plans. By remembering Putney in your estate plans, you will help to transform the future. Legacy gifts to Putney are 100% deductible for estate tax purposes.

A Special IRA Opportunity

If you are over age 70½ and have an IRA account, you may be required to take annual distributions to satisfy your required minimum distribution (RMD). Individuals may elect to distribute funds (up to $100,000/year) directly from IRA accounts to Putney, without increasing your adjusted gross income (AGI). While these distributions generally do not qualify for an income tax deduction, a “charitable IRA rollover” is a great way to satisfy your RMD and make a nice gift, especially so now that the standard deductions have been increased and many people will no longer choose to itemize.

Putney encourages all donors to consult their own advisors about the impact of their choices.

If you have already established a legacy gift for Putney, please let us know so that we may welcome you into the Legacy Circle. This will give us an opportunity to thank you appropriately for such a meaningful commitment and to recognize your commitment in our annual donor recognition report (if you wish).
