Music is the voice of The Putney School. It is through music that we express the collective personality of the community. At the heart of this is music making in all idioms and genres, from playing guitar around the campfire to performing in the community orchestra; from participating in the weekly all-school Sing to producing an album.
For All Levels & Abilities
Whether students want to learn to play an instrument for the first time or are experienced musicians looking to hone their skills, our talented staff are here to provide specialized instruction of the highest caliber, tailored for each individual student.
“We have such a diverse group of students with different interests, and we can cover just about anything anyone wants to do in the music realm.” — Jenna Rae, Music Co-Director
Sing
Our community comes together every Thursday to join in song. From madrigals to sacred choruses to sea shanties, Sing has been an important tradition since our founding in 1935.
Music Lessons
Our music lesson program is open to all students regardless of experience. We offer one-on-one instruction for students to explore or deepen their knowledge of a musical instrument.
Ensembles
Whether you are a beginning guitarist or seasoned soloist, we offer the opportunity to participate in everything from small group performances to school-wide events.
Music Production and Engineering
In this unique class, students record their own pieces from start to finish, growing as both artists and performers as they create original work.
Find Your Beat
We offer academic music courses, as well as music courses through our Evening Arts program, where students are encouraged to explore their artistic and creative possibilities.
